People often ask about experiences with Wegovy. How do you feel during the first few weeks? When do the effects kick in? How severe are the side effects? Below, you can read about patterns identified in the STEP study and from our online check-ins. No before-and-after photos and no weight-loss stories from individual users. These say little about what you will experience, and do not fit with how we communicate about medical care.
What is a typical first month like?
Wegovy is taken over a longer period than many people expect. You start with 0.25 mg per week and increase the dose by one step every four weeks. The starting dose is deliberately low and is intended to allow your body to adjust, not to produce a rapid effect.
During the first four weeks on 0.25 mg, many users experience:
- A slight feeling of nausea, often coming in waves around mealtimes.
- You feel full a bit sooner; you naturally end up eating a bit less.
- A feeling of tiredness or some other sensation in your stomach.
- Sometimes a few days of constipation, or loose stools instead.
For some people, it’s not too bad, whilst for others the first month is tougher than expected. That’s all part of the adjustment phase. The symptoms usually subside within one to two weeks once a stable dose has been reached.
When do people notice that it works?
Many users notice a reduction in appetite within the first month, often from the second or third week on 0.25 mg. It doesn’t come as a shock, but rather as a calmer feeling around mealtimes. Snacks are often left uneaten. The portion you used to need now feels like too much.
You usually don’t see any change on the scales until later on. The first few weeks on the low starting doses are about getting used to the medication, not about weight loss. From the higher doses (1.0 and 1.7 mg) onwards, people tend to see the kilos drop more frequently. The full effect builds up to the effective maintenance dose of 2.4 mg, which you reach after about 16 weeks.
In the STEP study, participants on the highest dose lost an average of 12 to 15 per cent of their body weight over 68 weeks. These are averages based on large groups. Your results will depend on your starting weight, your lifestyle and how your body responds.
What else changes apart from weight?
A pattern that many people report: less ‘food noise’. That’s the constant thinking about food, the search for snacks, and the restless feeling when you haven’t eaten for a few hours. For some people, this disappears almost entirely on Wegovy. For many, this is more surprising than the weight loss itself.
In our check-ins, we also hear that people are eating more slowly and are able to taste food better again. Some users report feeling less of a need for alcohol. Energy levels fluctuate: sometimes they actually increase as weight drops, and sometimes they are slightly lower in the first few weeks due to reduced food intake. Taste preferences also change for many people; fatty or heavy food is less appealing, whilst lighter meals are better tolerated. This isn’t the case for everyone, but it is a pattern that recurs regularly.

What do you often find difficult?
It doesn’t all happen by itself. Here are a few issues that many people come up against:
- The long build-up: It takes about 16 weeks to reach the effective dose of 2.4 mg. Until then, the effects are less pronounced. Anyone expecting significant results within three months may be disappointed.
- The new wave of complaints that follows every price increase: Each dose (0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 1.7, 2.4 mg) may cause mild nausea lasting one to two weeks. That’s to be expected.
- The price: Wegovy is not covered by the NHS in the Netherlands for weight loss in cases of obesity. The costs increase with higher doses, and you will have to pay for it yourself.
- The pace: Weight loss with Wegovy is steady, not rapid. Many people see a gradual reduction of a few kilos per month at the higher doses.
Do the check if you’d like to find out whether a guided programme with Wegovy is right for you.
How does a trajectory work?
A trajectory with Wegovy injections Our service is entirely online. The initial consultation takes place via video call or chat. During the first few months, we’ll be in touch more frequently via online check-ins. We’ll discuss how the injections are going, any side effects you’re experiencing, and when your dose can be increased.

It contains the same active ingredient (semaglutide), but Wegovy is available in a higher dose (2.4 mg compared to 2 mg). Many people notice a slightly stronger effect on their appetite at the higher doses. The side-effect profile is similar.

What is a surprising effect that many people report?
The ‘food noise’ phenomenon: thinking about food less constantly, even between meals. For some people, this is a radical change, bringing a sense of mental calm they haven’t experienced in a long time.
