How does Ozempic work?
Ozempic contains semaglutide, a substance that mimics the action of the body’s own hormone, GLP-1. This hormonal system is involved in, amongst other things, appetite, satiety and the regulation of blood sugar levels.
Appetite
Semaglutide affects signals in the brain that are involved in hunger and food intake.
Saturation
You may feel fuller sooner and for longer, which can make it easier to eat less.
Gastric emptying
GLP-1 effects can slow down gastric emptying, which in turn influences the feeling of fullness.
Ozempic is authorised for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Its use specifically for weight loss is off-label and is only considered following an individual medical assessment.
Dosage & administration
What is Ozempic made of?
Ozempic is usually started at a dose of 0.25 mg once a week. After four weeks, the dose is increased to 0.5 mg. The doctor may then adjust the dose further, depending on the indication and the response.
Once a week* Ozempic is authorised for type 2 diabetes. The exact dose is determined by the doctor; its use for weight loss is off-label.
Clinical trials involving various doses of Ozempic showed a clear reduction in weight. The amount of weight a person loses varies depending on the dose, duration of treatment and individual circumstances.

The results cited are from studies involving adults with type 2 diabetes and do not guarantee weight loss in individual cases.
