What is Wegovy?
Wegovy is a medicine containing semaglutide as the active ingredient. It is authorised in the EU for weight management in adults who meet the medical criteria, as an adjunct to a calorie-restricted diet and increased physical activity.
Semaglutide belongs to the class of GLP-1 receptor agonists. GLP-1 is a hormone produced naturally by the body that is involved, amongst other things, in appetite, food intake and satiety. The injectable form of Wegovy is administered subcutaneously once a week. The treating doctor determines the appropriate dosage and titration schedule.

Wegovy is taken once a week. The usual build-up period lasts sixteen weeks. Your doctor may adjust the dosage schedule if side effects or your medical condition make this necessary.

How do you use the Wegovy pen?
Wegovy is administered under the skin once a week, on the same day of the week. Suitable injection sites are the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. Always follow the instructions for your pen and the advice given by your doctor, nurse or pharmacist.

Check that you have the correct pen and dose, and follow the instructions in the patient information leaflet.
Choose the injection site
Use your abdomen, thigh or upper arm, and alternate the injection site regularly.
Administer the dose
Inject the prescribed dose in accordance with the instructions for your specific pen.
Store correctly
Store Wegovy in accordance with the current product information and avoid freezing or exposure to heat.
After placing your first order, you can book an appointment at a participating Vaccination Centre. There, a doctor or nurse can walk you through the injection technique step by step.
Side effects and safety
What are the side effects of Wegovy?
The most common side effects associated with Wegovy are gastrointestinal complaints. These are often observed during the build-up phase and are usually mild to moderate.
Side effects may also occur with long-term use. The official product information lists gallstones and cholecystitis, amongst other things, as relevant points to bear in mind.
Gastrointestinal symptoms mainly occur around the start of treatment and when the dose is increased. If symptoms are pronounced, the doctor may decide to slow down the dose escalation.
Wegovy is available on prescription only and is not suitable for everyone. Your doctor will therefore take into account your medical history, other medication and any relevant risks.

The STEP 1 study investigated semaglutide 2.4 mg once a week in adults who were overweight or obese but did not have diabetes, in combination with lifestyle counselling.
