What is Ozempic?
Semaglutide affects appetite and satiety
Ozempic contains semaglutide. This substance mimics the action of GLP-1, a hormone produced naturally by the body that is involved, amongst other things, in blood sugar regulation, appetite and food intake.
Ozempic is authorised in the EU for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes. Weight loss may occur during treatment; use specifically for weight loss is outside the authorised indication.
Loss of appetite
Semaglutide affects the signals involved in hunger and food intake.
Greater satiety
Feeling fuller can help you eat smaller portions.
Once a week
Ozempic is injected under the skin once a week.
Use and structure
Ozempic is taken once a week
According to the product information, treatment begins with 0.25 mg per week. After four weeks, this is increased to 0.5 mg. If necessary, the treating doctor may then increase the dose further.
This is the recommended dosage schedule for Ozempic and does not constitute personalised dosage advice. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dosage.
Result
What can you expect from semaglutide?
Weight loss varies from person to person and depends, amongst other things, on the dose, duration of treatment, diet, physical activity and medical condition. Research into semaglutide clearly shows that the dose makes a difference in this regard. In the STEP 2 trial involving people who were overweight or obese and had type 2 diabetes, 2.4 mg of semaglutide resulted in an average weight loss of 9.6%; in the same study, 1.0 mg was the dose used for diabetes management.
* The 6–10% is an indicative range and does not constitute an approved Ozempic claim or guarantee. Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes, not for weight management.
Side effects and safety
What are the common side effects?
The most common side effects associated with Ozempic are gastrointestinal symptoms. These are often mild to moderate and frequently occur during the initial treatment period or following a dose increase.
Common complaints
The EMA lists nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, amongst other things, as common side effects.
A medical assessment is essential
Ozempic is available on prescription only and is not suitable for everyone. As its use for weight loss is off-label, your doctor will carefully assess your medical history, any medication you are taking, potential contraindications and whether this treatment is appropriate for you.
