You discover you forgot your injection. Don't panic. Skipping once is usually not a problem. It comes down to what you do next.
Below, we explain how it works, and when to get in touch anyway.
The 5-day rule on forgetting Ozempic
The rule of thumb is simple:
- Less than five days late? Prick the missed dose after all. After that, keep your regular day.
- More than five days late? Skip this dose. Wait for your next fixed day.
Ozempic works slowly. It stays in your body for about a week. This allows for slack if you miss a shot. Up to five days after your regular day, you can still catch up with the dose. After that, you are too close to your next prick.
An example. You normally prick on Sunday. You notice on Wednesday that you forgot. That's within five days, so you still prick. Had it only been on Friday? Then you're over it. You skip and just prick again on Sunday.
Never a double dose
It sounds logical: missed one prick, so next time two. Yet you shouldn't. A double dose is much more likely to cause nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Your body has trouble coping with such a large amount in one go.
So: never two doses at once to make up for something. Stick to the 5-day rule or skip. More than that is not necessary.
Want to shift your regular day?
Sometimes your puncture day is no longer convenient. You may change your regular day. Keep to one rule: there must be at least 3 days between two Ozempic injections sit. So prick on your new desired day, provided it falls at least three days after your previous prick. From then on, that is your new fixed day.
Don't do this too often. Pricking every week on about the same day keeps the amount in your blood stable. This is better for the effect and for fewer side effects.

Does the phase make a difference?
A little. In the build-up phase, the first few weeks, your body is still getting used to it. A missed shot is no big deal then, but do pick up the schedule again neatly. In the stable phase of Ozempic, when you have been on the same dose for a longer period, missing a shot is no problem at all, as long as you follow the 5-day rule.
Do you forget a prick more often? Then that undermines your results. A fixed reminder helps. Put a notification in your phone on your prick day. Or link it to a fixed time, like your breakfast on Saturday. Many people actually forget less if it is attached to a fixed habit.
When do you get in touch?
Most of the time, you will solve it yourself with the rules above. Still, call your doctor, the GP surgery or our counselling service if:
You missed several punctures in a row.
You are unsure what dose to take next.
You had just switched doses and are not sure where you stand.
A short question gives instant clarity. Better to call than guess.
